I agree that there's not much difference between mountain climbing and hair coloring. Although, try telling THAT to a peak bagger. That'd be pretty hilarious. But, for me, the pleasure is in the journey. What is summiting a peak without the maps, gear buying, grunting, sweating, aching and the group discussion that inevitably turns into a screaming match because everyone is tired, cold/hot and just a little bit scared? Just the same, what is doing your hair without the trip to the beauty supply shop, reading the labels, fielding all the suggestions, considering colors, the pain, the fear, getting out the instruments and making a huge mess (in my case, anyway)? Maybe for some people, it is all vanity, but I wouldn't be surprised if it weren't also about the journey. A lot of people find challenging stuff to be just plain fun.

I would never pretend to understand politics and I do think you have some valid points. As for Indiana's Evan Bayh, I am wondering if the reason he quit could be that his wife's job was being used to give him grief....and he was sick of it. And she had breast cancer a few years back...wondering if there is a return? Believe me, I am not saying that I know the reasons he is not running. He has an excellent reputation in our state and is very well liked here. Good luck with the hair...hopes it turns out just great.
