Tell me all about it, dear...

I got this job through an online application, but it helped that someone from my previous job had worked here for years and put in several good words for me. The previous job was also online application only, but my resume (which had to be attached) had the experience they were looking for as far as dealing with customers.

The last three jobs I got, which covers about 15 years of employment, I got through people I knew. From what I understand, that's the only way to get an edge these days. If you have any friends who own businesses, ask them if they need summer help. If they don't, ask them if they know anyone who needs help. If you want Wolf to do this thing on his own, advise him to ask his friends/acquaintances where they are working, and find out if those places need more help. Also, when I'm walking around town, I still see good old fashioned "Help Wanted" signs. Depending on what's available where you live, a walk-in thing might still be possible. Good luck to him!

Good luck to Wolf.. I agree with HOlly and Amy. Do they need summer help at the school?

My oldest son graduated college and spent almost a year sending in online applications. He sent in hundreds, and got two interviews, finally a job in an unrelated field, no college required. So, so frustrating. For a high school kid, I'd have him ask at the school. I got my first job (and several subsequent ones) because people would call in to the career center and ask for people to apply. Also have him ask his friends, and you ask yours. Somebody's gotta have an in somewhere.

Wish I could help, I have sent reams of resumes into the ether and have no idea if anyone has had a look. I spent eight years shleping tables because, but for one temp job where they found me, only one application got a view and I'm pretty certain it was just for show, as in, gotta interview at least two other people before I hire my friend/brother/son. I would love to hear of any ideas that work for Wolf, I only know the old fashioned, show up and land the job way, this old dog needs new tricks.

I have no idea on how to get a job any more. I agree asking friends and people who have businesses about hiring. What about that place you shop where the older woman just adores your son...?

When I first started looking for jobs outside of my hometown where everybody knew everybody (seriously 1500 people), I found that networking through friends was a great way to get in the door. (this was way pre internet anyway) as you have someone to put in a good word. I wouldn't have this job if it weren't for the person at my previous job who had worked here for many years and talked me in (and agreed my last job screwed me over). I owe her a big debt of gratitude. Networking will always be important, as paper can only say so much. A great resume goes a long way also, once you get some experience.
