Tell me all about it, dear...

Rebecca has had her Master's Degree since May, but all she has to show for it so far is the burden of a student loan. (We paid for all of the girls schooling through their Bachelor's Degrees, but couldn't afford to cover grad school, as well.) I don't have grandiose visions for my girls future, either, and will be breathe a huge sigh of relief if they can find employment that offers the same kind of benefits you want for Wolf. It really is a shame that this is what the American Dream has come to.

I know that Wolf is at a point in his life where he has no idea what is going to make him happy, and he's lucky to have your guidance. I agree with your assessment that Wolf needs a skill, and I think that any young person (not just an Aspie) needs to learn how to be a cog, take orders, do things they hate, wake up at an inconvenient time, etc. etc. I think it does a lot for a person's self-esteem and sense of security to know that they can always get a job doing x skill or know that they can do x very well. Remember, though, you chose the life of a freelancer for a reason. You could have gotten a steady job at any point, but you always chose freedom. Maybe now, you have less money, and a little less stability, but without those hours of freedom, you may have never figured out who you are and what you want, and the best way to raise a son. So, who knows what the future holds? Maybe once he's got a few years of cruise ship cooking under his belt, there will be a lot more possibilities in the world for him.

I have to agree with you. The American dream has degenerated into hopes for union pay and benefits, and the drudgery that goes with it. At least if he's lucky enough to score a job with a cruise ship, he'll have the advantage of traveling around the world to go with it!

I think your ideas for Wolf's future are solid and practical and suit him well. So many young people today don't want to work in a service job or take orders from someone else... We need all those cogs in the wheel to keep going.

Still can't figure out how people justify valuing the flashy fenders over the cogs. The machine doesn't work without all the little pieces yet our society devalues them to the point of poverty and then blames them for their lot. I am a communist in the proper definition of the word, I think everyone in the system deserves the same compensation. Besides if we truly awarded value based on contribution the heart surgeon would be worth 250 million and the banker half a million. "got mine, fuck you" is the definition of capitalism now isn't it? I'm watching The West Wing on netflix, not too bad but I'm not sure if the fruitless nature that is politics which is depicted so well will make me dump the show despite the excellent acting. Best of luck to Wolf, cooking is a respectable career.
