Tell me all about it, dear...

Well, Mick is lucky that you have the perspective to realize the reason for his behavior. Many people don't see the grief underneath the anger, which is why so many relationships fall apart the second they hit their first snag. Knowing that doesn't make it any easier to live with, of course. Maybe if Mick understood that holding it in is about as useful as trying to hold in diarrhea indefinitely, he'd realize that he's tearing up his insides just to avoid a few minutes of "indignity." Since he recently experienced an explosive illness, maybe that was his body's way of telling him that sometimes purging is a necessary thing. That's SO hard for many men, I know, who were trained from birth that any negative emotion that isn't anger is a sign of weakness. This is just another way the patriarchy has screwed us all over, men and women alike.

The denial that goes with death is disturbing. Your take on Mick's Gram knowing she was ready to go makes complete sense - my Mom made a similar decision and I had to honor it. I hope Mick can come to terms with his grief and find a happier way to acknowledge the anniversary of her passing.
