Tell me all about it, dear...

Boy, are we on the same wavelength. I was just having a conversation about sometimes wishing I could "try on that 'winner' mentality." But, in the end, I have to be able to live with myself.

Believe me, Japan wants to win too (which is why so far the Olympic sports I've seen on TV are table tennis, weight lifting (the smaller classes), women's soccer, swimming, men's gymnastics (not women's)and looooots of judo. It's not even just that they only show sports where there are Japanese participants - there are Japanese rowers, for instance. They only show the ones where they have a good chance of a medal. But in general, I agree with you. I hate to hear someone refer to a wedding as the 'happiest day of my life'. If that's the best part of your marriage, then why bother? Throw yourself a party instead. Gymnastics is worse, both because participants are that much younger and because being in the Olympics really is something that's likely to be a peak experience. If you meet an Olympian, you know it - it's the first thing everyone mentions about them. (Of course, my experience may be a little biased because the Olympians I've met are rowers and I met them in a rowing context.)

If the whole world shared your mindset we might be living in caves - or we might have gone to the stars by now. One person can do extraordinary things, and singular thinking has its place; but working together requires exchanged ideas between those singular thinkers and those whose life in the trenches gives them better perspective. I think if you could truly integrate both sides you'd have a far, far richer world and one where advancement moved more smoothly and consistently.

Did you see my post of the Romney speech where he of the "every businessman is an island" thinks the Olympians are only there because of the many support them and help them along the way. Too funny really. I think one of the finest example of the team mentality is being played out once again by NASA. Amazing what humans can do when they work together. We should apply more of that to our world don't you think?

And you are?
