Tell me all about it, dear...

Don't give her a damn thing.

Agree with you about manners in general ... but on the other hand I don't think it's rude at all for a couple to give a joint birthday gift. (On the other hand, I do think something handmade trumps a gift card, so there's that.)

I think that being polite and kind can be it's own reward. If it makes you happy to give her a nice gift that you worked hard on, then by all means do it, and enjoy it. That is a very, very thoughtful and sweet gift (in my opinion), but I worry that she won't appreciate it. The eggplant parm would be an equally thoughtful gift. Maybe that'll be good for after she gets her freezer cleaned out. I hope you have a good time at the party.

A painting of a birdhouse is a great idea and a lovely gesture.

Oh damn, LA, I hope she is gracious about your gift. It breaks my heart to think she would say something snide to you. Well I guess it's all about Karma. You're putting something good out in the universe... what she does with it afterwards doesn't cancel your good vibes. I'm just worried about your feelings,

Enjoy the painting of it, the process of it. Then forget about it. Wait, a joint gift is rude? I thought that was ok.

And you are?
