Tell me all about it, dear...

Tsk. No celebrations for LA, ever again. Bollocks. It feels like it now, in mid-menopausal gloom, but bloody hell girl, you're not even 50 yet, still a young slip of a thing. What about the party to celebrate your return from an extended stay in the UK? (I'm nothing if not optimistic) Your first best-seller? And your 50th, if that's what you fancy. It may be a number to Mick, but if you want a party... Love and love and love xxx

I agree with Anna. You deserve your big deal! The milestone itself doesn't matter so much. The point is that it's a celebration of you. It gives the rest of us the opportunity to tell you that you've done a good job and take the time to appreciate you. Maybe Mick meant that HIS 50th wasn't very significant. I can't believe he'd say the same about yours. It really is ok to stop doing for everybody else once in awhile, and let others do for you.

I think you can make up milestones for yourself - there's always a reason to party! I welcome fall too - love that season.

Personally I think you need to have a party for yourself. Whether it is an anniversary of your marriage since you gave up your wedding celebration or an I'm-So-Not-50-Yet party or a special birthday.....plan a party. You like to cook and have people around so - have them around. It's isn't Mick's choice this time. It's yours!

I'm afraid to rejoice over the weather because heat might rear it's ugly head again and smack me back down!

Same here, weatherwise, upper 90's forever and then suddenly...poof!.. fall! 70's , 60's today and rain, maybe warmer this weekend, but not like the awful 90's. I was just looking at my stock of canned apples to see how long they will last since there are not any on my trees this year and it is definitely Pie Season now.

No, you just don't have many more built-in events that you get to simply by virtue of getting older (though I do think a 10 and 25th anniversary are worth celebrating and even Mick can't claim they don't matter, because they are so palpable an accomplishment.) But you also have First Book Publication Day to look forward to, for instance, and I can't think of too many life events bigger than that.

I laid on the beach and watched the waves when I turned 50. Thought it was over and done. I turn 60 in February, and I am toying with the idea of having a party. I probably won't but it's fun to ponder.

Nancy has hit me with surprise birthday parties -- and I am gullible enough that I really was surprised each time -- at 35, at 50, and at 60. (She claims that there will be no public acknowledgment when I turn 70 but I don't know.) A few days ago I came across a gag t-shirt that had been a 50th birthday present. (It says "It took me 50 years to look this good!") I was greatly amused to think that if the shirt were a person it would now be old enough to vote.
