I am simultaneously jealous and excited for you. I can't wait to hear about where and when you're going... and how you're going to acquire enough extra large luggage to stow a dozen or so of your regular readers because you love us so much, right?

When I graduated the art academy, I took myself on a solo trip to "the continent". I flew to London , toured around the art museums and galleries, took the boat to Hoek van Holland (terrible north sea overnight trip), LOVED Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum etc, took the train down to Zurich, then Koln (Cologne- my Grandpa was from there) then to Florence, Venice and Rome. Did you notice what was missing? France. No desire really, and not enough time . I am not a fan of French art on the whole with few exceptions, sorry Matisse and Monet, I'm just not, maybe a little Lautrec and the like, but anyway. I ended up adding an extra week for Italy and was gone almost a month total. Best trip and time of my life,LOVED Italy and still not sorry about France.

I just watched the very same movie...again. It is definitely on my list of over and over movies along with The American President (we should be so lucky to have such a president) and "Lost Moon" Nasa's finest hour. Just goes to show what humans can do if they have a mind to.

Good luck with the travel plans...I doubt I will ever get there unless one of my sisters gets wealthy enough to buy herself a ticket and I go along with her. Husband doesn't want to travel to Europe A.T. A.L.L.!!!

I was in France and Paris last year. I am tall and overweight, and while I took a lot of French, it was very long ago and I am not very good at it. And I loved Paris. I hadn't expected to. I went prepared for rudeness. And with a couple of exceptions, everyone was lovely. I enjoyed it very much and can't wait to go back. Will be interested to hear about your trip! I am planning my next one already. Love to travel.

Oooh, are you going to visit Anna?? England is the only other country I've been to (not counting Canada and a brief foray into Mexico). I loved it! As for France - Old Quebec is a lovely compromise!

Go and have an adventure! It's not about them, it's about you!

G promises me we will visit Europe one day, preferably soon. I hope he's right alongside me. He's taller than me by 3" but in my case it's because he's multilingual. He speaks (at last count) 3 or 4 languages with some fluency and at least a smattering of a few more. Paris? Intimidate me? Hah! I raised four children - all teenagers simultaneously at one point - and didn't murder a one of them. Parisian snobbery ain't got nothing on that!

I loved Paris - went there twice in the 1980's. So much to do and see and eat. I never felt like I "fit" there, either. I didn't realize it so clearly until I spent time in Scotland, 5 years ago, and realized how many people there looked like my relatives! Then there was the fine, fine bacon and of course that whisky. Still, Paris is worth a visit. Oh yeah, and Scotland, too.

I speak no French and had absolutely no problem in Paris. My husband speaks a little, but those darned French don't like it when Americans butcher their language and preferred talking with me. Most fun night? Sitting in an old theater, watching Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf - with French subtitles. Everyone, except us, was smoking cigarettes - which I hate...except in this setting. Awesome! Italy is the same way. No need to speak their language, they will figure out a way to accommodate you.
