Tell me all about it, dear...

I had a wooden worktop in my last kitchen. I was meant to wax it, apparently, which I didn't do so it did get stained and marked as time went by but I kind of liked that, the evidence of life lived. I guess we're both heretics. I love your kitchen. And you xx

Our house is kind of a mix of hgh and low-end, probably depending on what was done by the original owners and what by the bank after the owner died and the owner's girlfriend's kids trashed the place. So we have a fancy stainless oven (I don't find stainless hard to clean, but then I don't have kids), but Formica counters. The realtor was all sure we'd want to replace those with granite right away, but we said "Why? They don't look horrible and they work." I wouldn't mind stone (probably artificial stone) or Corian, but not until well after we do all the stuff that actually affects function.

We couldn't afford granite or Corian so we got formica but it looks great....I'm sure you will get used to the black stove before long. I found with the expensive double sink I got a year ago that while the color (a creamy light coffee)is gorg-e-ous; it does show every water spot unless I wipe it down all the time.

My kitchen sounds like dichroic's. I have stainless appliances (the exposed side of the fridge is black and has all my magnets on it) and very light grey formica countertops that I actually don't hate. If someone offered to put in Corian for free or cheap I would take it but it's not in our budget to change now. I would want something as light or lighter anyway and not as busy as granite as I have brushed nickel tin backsplashes on 3 sides with a diamond pattern that I installed myself and love. I don't find the stainless much worse than the "finergerprint proof" (hah!) black textured fridge I had that was so hard to get the sticky smudges out of that horrid texture and then it looked really bad in the sunlight. I wipe the stainless down with a damp clean dishtowel and they look fine. I have never used stainless cleaner on them which I remember as oily and smelly, but I don't know if it still is. Next year- no full time kids in the house so fingerprints should be minimal as the adults actually use the handles for things.

We're looking at Corian for our new (!) kitchen, and I thought DuPont (the manufacturer) said that you shouldn't cut directly on the surface and also that you shouldn't put hot things right on it? I mean, if those things aren't true, we'll consider it more carefully!

Ha! You are so very right on the granite countertops and on a lot of the variegated ones of all types. I was constantly trying to scrub out the "natural variations" in the ex-mother-in-law's.

Wow, I feel like you've pretty much trashed my kitchen... Funny, I've never had a problem with granite countertops (which came with the house, and I was damn glad of it), despite major spills. I do regret that the former owners went with stainless steel appliances, though - only because of the magnet thing. Anything stuck to the front of a refrigerator looks shitty (whether you use tape or magnets), but magnets ARE more fun.

Everything in my kitchen is boring white. Since I don't cook. it's okay.

Thankfully, more problems I don't have to worry about! :)

If you and I ever went kitchen shopping we'd get along great. I like high tech appliances, but I don't like them looking high tech. I prefer a cozy homey kitchen, that says come on in for coffee and cookies. I say the lower the maintenance the better. Still waiting for that self cleaning kitchen to hit the market.

I've been reading your blog for years - all through high school, my career, although I've only checked in once or twice over the last few years to see if you kept up with the blog, but strangely enough I just read your newest posts and found that I missed you! I've never even met you, and you don't even know the influence you've had on me. :)

And you are?
