Your mother really believed that YOU were the selfish one? Incredible!

The rare cake or pie for breakfast episodes at our house make them all the more special and fun. Like Cliff Huxtable said: "You've got your eggs, and milk and flour in there..it's healthy!" Not something you'd do all the time but just the right thing once in a while. Glad you got to have your cake....and eat it too!

I don't think sharing the story with Wolf was bad - your whole focus has been to teach him to consider other people's feelings and put himself in their place, right? This sounds like success to me. Of course now he has the basic concept he needs to learn the fine points, like that it's OK to share, just not to take, but that sounds like a normal learning process for a kid.

I agree with dichroic...I think Wolf is learning how to feel....and hearing little stories about your childhood world will hopefully help him understand...you always find a way to teach him a life lesson and this sounds like another one....Happy Birthday again!

I've been reading your comments pretty much forever on some of my favorites' blogs, both here on DL and elsewhere. My bad for taking so miserably long to get here! Your childhood sounds right on par with mine. My mother's last words to me were that the reason I've had so many difficulties in my adult life is that they (she and my father) didn't beat me enough when I was a kid. Yeah, I can so totally relate. But from what I gather, you took that horrible beginning and turned it around for your own. He clearly has a nice secure sense of self if he has the presence of mind to worry about your past! Good for you!

I said it before, and I'll say it again... You're a good mum. Maybe the best. Wolf is going to grow up well-balanced and thoughtful because of you. I only hope I'll be half as good with my own child.

And you are?
