Tell me all about it, dear...

That really IS a great gift...you two can become closer, healthier, you will firm up before the wedding of the century, MIL gets some adult conversation with a woman who cares about her and the gung-ho people who start the year out at the gym will drop like flies before the end of February. Good for you and for MIL...

I agree, totally a win-win. But runs on the treadmill?? Wow!

Get some good shoes, please. Chucks are not good for working out, and once you hurt your feet you won't be able to go for months. When your feet hurt, even making dinner becomes a chore. Trust me on this.

Seconding Mary on the shoe thing - however for a beginning just get some shaped in-soles for your Chucks. The no arch support thing is the biggest killer of feet though some extra cushioning will be nice once you get a bit fitter. And yep the New Year's people usually don't make it to the end of January. Though you guys don't get rid of them and the "I'll get in shape for summer" crew out of the way at the same time like we do herre in NZ. Having someone to train with is huge - you kind of don't notice the exercise! Enjoy. Hugs Bels

Old people at the gym are the best motivators. I'm going to disagree slightly with Mary and Anabels and say that the shoes you need depend on what you're doing. If you are planning to run (or walk and build up to running) then absolutely, get the best shoes you can afford. They will save your feet and your joints. But if you choose to use a stationary cycle to warm up and then spend most of your time lifting, the Chucks should be fine - for weight lifting you actually want very flat shoes with no padding. (Go check with Mick, I'm pretty sure he'll agree.) Since I do my lifting at home, I actually go barefoot on those days. On erg days I use sneakers just to give me a more rigid footbase and pad the back of my heel. (For real rowing the shoes are mostly already built into the boat.) Also, check out stumptuous.com for reasons you *should* weightlift and lots of good tips.

My daughter just joined Planet Fitness and suggested I go with her. Ugh!

I wish I had somebody to go the gym with - it's the only way I'll go, and even then it's not guaranteed!
