I heard the Gretel story very well told once, set in a backwoods cabin with a visiting parson, complete with Tennessee accent.

Hah! When my youngest was about 7 he asked me to read some stories from grimms Fairy Tales. I knew that some had unhappy endings but I did not realize that almost ALL of them were in fact, grim. So, after having read the start of two stories that ended badly for someone , and not necessarily a bad guy, I tried one more. Part way down the first page a child, I think? fell down a well and my son stopped me , begging me not to finish OR ever read those stories to him ever again.
