It just occurred to me you might like a recent favorite of mine: Scott Westerfield's trilogy Uglies, Pretties, and Extras. (SF, YA) The first seems to be the best, but the others are worth reading.

I think it is a major fit if both parties like to READ in the first place. It does give you things to discuss and even debate. Here's to having a library card!
