That's exactly what happened to my girls, I think -- their pre-college bedrooms got used up for other things once they went away, and K now feels that she has no place to call her own here. It's what makes for their living together frustration when she's home. And when they built condos on our last bit of farmland here, they said with great confidence "Oh, no one with children will move there, it won't impact the schools!" Oh sure. They didn't fit in the elementary school they're districted for (which is across a major highway), and now we're building an addition to the high school. Coincidence? I think not.
