Tell me all about it, dear...

I agree LA, there is *nothing* humorous about cruelty. Hey! I thought I was the only one rooting for Neville and Luna! So glad to know I'm not alone.

Oh, the pull-wings-off-flies-and-legs-off-spiders humor. No offense, since you mentioned your family in this, but people like that are assholes. That's the very definition of "asshole," in fact. If you look "asshole" up in the dictionary, you'll see "1. someone who stomps on someone else's nice, new white sneakers; 2. someone who makes people in his or her family cry and laughs about it; 3. Beltway drivers at rush hour."

I am with you on this one in every part, from the flare up to remembering, "It's just a joke." I'm glad you tagged Neville and Luna on to that, I love that girl.

Or hey, let's post spoilers for HBP and ruin it for everyone. Jerks. I don't care much, for myself, since I reread books and peek ahead at endings, but given how many others have said they do.... You don't get to decide what should be important to other people. That's one of those "basic respect" things.

Sorry to hear the flare-up is hitting you so hard. Here's hoping you're feeling good again Very soon.

I agree, when it isn't funny to the person it is being done to it isn't a joke. A joke should make the "victim" laugh as much as the people in on playing it. Wrecking somebody's stuff and scaring the shit out of them (especially kids) just isn't funny. A true joke player knows the person they are kidding and know where to draw the line. (Every April Fools my son gets the school to pretend to give him a bad report and then he can psyche me!!) OH and Luna and Neville would make a cute couple.

i hate - hate hate hate that kind of 'humor.' it's weird, because i like the show jackass, but really only the times when they're beating the crap out of themselves/each other. i hate the practical jokes part. it makes me squirmy. i don't get off on others' pain, never have. that strain of sensitivity was not my friend in elementary and middle school, i'll tell you what. xoxo, d

I've never seen Overhaulin' but it sounds like the same kind of mean chain-jerking shit that Ashton Kutcher does on Punk'd. The old Candid Camera stuff used to be funny because they did stuff to baffle the hell out of people and then filmed the funny reaction; Punk'd does mean stuff that scares people half to death or provokes them emotionally. I don't think making someone cry or get all upset is funny at all, and it especially pisses me off that the victims then feel like they have to suck it up and be good sports about it because they know they are on TV. It wouldn't surprise me if they find Ashton Kutcher murdered some day... can you imagine the list of potential suspects?

Luna and Neville ARE cute arent they? And the mean thing, as always I can so relate.

I'm sorry you're on the feeling poorly diet. It'll be cool, though, when you're feeling better AND back into your skinny jeans! I hope that's soon.

Cruel-Irony - 2005-07-20 20:04:15
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of humiliation/cruelty "jokes". Can't stand them actually. I stopped watching Overhaulin' for the same reason. Oh, and I'm sorry to hear about your flare; hope you feel better real soon.

My uncle Z once told me (when I was wee) that "if it hurts someone, that's not funny". So yeah. I agree with you. Sorry you're feelin' puny. did you get my email?

I hope you feel better soon. And thank you. I spent the only $30 I didn't have this month on that little surprise, and was so, so careful to avoid all the potential spoiler sites. I allow myself one, MAYBE two, light recreational reads a year. That jerk last entry really ruined it for me, and somehow I doubt he or she realizes what a very mean thing it was to do. White sneaker stompers tend to have a "but I'm the good guy!" complex, tend to live their lives in denial of how small-hearted they really can be.
