I got a huge kick out of your Manderley reference. My oldest daughter is named Rebecca because I loved that book so much.

Heh. I don't know, I thought that for it's genre, Batman Begins was actually really well done. You've GOT to have the superhero brooding on the rooftops, you've GOT to have the ironic echo lines for the epic melodramatic feel. I mean... he's Batman, Tragic Epic Hero (TM). Compared to the rest of the Batman movies, I think that this one finally equalled the original in quality. At least those echoed lines were actually somewhat meaningful and fairly well written (again, for the genre). It's a convention. There's certain things that these Tragic Epic Heroes (TM) HAVE to do. Else you come away thinking, "HEY. What sort of comic book movie was THAT?? What are they trying to pull here??" Personally, I appreciated that they finally added the depth and history of character that makes Batman an interesting figure. (I agree with you on the nipples, though. Half of the movie she looked like she was trying to poke someone's eye out.)
