How about a master's degree in common sense?

Before I get to yesterday's adventures (which include turning MIL into a delinquent) a big bundle of paperwork from Wolf's new school came in the mail and needs to be returned ASAP. In person, thankyouverymuch. Okay, fine. All school districts are hurting for money, because of course the best way to offset the federal deficit is to nickel and dime the schools to death, as opposed to, say, ending the f-ing WARS. So the district providing postage paid return envelopes with the bundle would be a financial hardship. But one of the other big things with Podunkville CSD is conservation and concern for the environment. Huge honking deal over there with composting cafeteria waste and having the kids creep around in the semi-dark because well-lit hallways are 'wasteful'. So demanding every parent in the district drive to the school to hand deliver paperwork makes fantastic sense!

Perhaps it's slightly cheaper to have at least two secretaries and a security person be on hand to receive the paperwork in each school building, even with running those wasteful lights in the offices and the extra work for and expense of the custodians cleaning up after a 1,000 people trampling in and out, rather than providing return envelopes even without postage.

Cost of 1,000 envelopes vs 10 office staff + 5 security + custodians + utilities x 14 days?um, okay.

But, hello? Environmental stewards? The postman is coming to the school every day anyhow. Permitting the parents to mail the paperwork instead of insisting each of us drive there to hand it over in person would be far less taxing on the environment, yes? Did you assume we'd all walk? Or perhaps we'd form a massive carpool and commute together in Sadie's flex-fuel minivan? All 1,000 of us crammed into a Chrysler?

Boy, that's some smart thinking over there. Fills me with confidence about the kind of wise educators in charge of my son's schooling.

I also like the hearty "Screw you" offered to the parents who can't get to the school during business hours. Got health problems? Toddlers and babies? A job? Want to use your own envelope and mail the stuff in? Too bad. Welcome to Country Club High where every family has a stay-at-home parent, a nanny, and an extra car.

Feh. I can see I'm going to have to join the PTA again and be a voice of reason aka: a royal pain in the ass with the reality checks. Watch out Muffy and Chip, LA the working class scold is back in town.

Dang it. Now I'm too aggravated to do justice to the big fun with MIL yesterday. Guess I'll finish filling out the forms and haul my buns over to the school.

Grumble, ~LA
