Coloring Contest for Grown-Ups!

Giving my brain a break from the daily 'puff and piffle'. Today's puff is a lighthearted romp through the possible ways of overcoming the quasi-officially sanctioned denial of health services to HIV/AIDS patients in developing countries. Not much different from the situation here in the States where no health insurance is pretty much a government approved death sentence. "No HMO? Not poor enough for Welfare? Got a yicky disease? Then die, you loser." From Haiti to Haight-Ashbury the song remains the same. Except in developing nations there's actually a chance of changing public policy and getting folks the care they need.

As you can imagine, HMO-less me has been having all sorts of giggles with this one.

I'm telling you, man, the writer's life is nothing but titties and beer.

Speaking of big fun, I went to Wolf's school today to discuss yesterday's playground incident and when I got there the school was in lock-down. Luckily I was able to ascertain the cause of all the botheration and swarm of state and local fuzz at the school wasn't my kid's fault (for once) so I tootled off to give Jet a bath at the carwash. She needed it, the yard forest has been extra randy this year and my poor car was the innocent hit-and-run victim of amok tree sex. Serious spooge. However Jet's all shiny and black again and I was actually able to see through the windows on the drive home!

Despite the arboreal spunk on my car I am giving Pam and Terri's suggestion of green for my office some serious thought. Back in the day when our newly combined family moved into our new Brady place my mother glommed onto our house's rudimentary half-bath as her personal salon de maquillage. But as this room was also the potty of choice for our infrequent guests she decided to fix it up a little. The house's previous owner had roughed in the plumbing for sink, bowl and shower, but only got as far as putting in a toilet. A vanity, medicine cabinet and sink were duly purchased and installed. She set some shelves in where the shower should have gone and had my dad finish the tiling (which had been abandoned with only one wall finished). She put a wooden shutter in the window's bottom half and a frothy dotted swiss valance above. The room was actually kind of cute. But what to do with the walls above the tile?

My unimaginative mother (the one who zapped me with that crappy hideously popular name) was going with the traditional powder blue. Ugh. I thought this a mean thing to do to the newly cute bathroom and made a case for a bright apple green instead. By this time my mother was starting to recognize that her 'weird' artsy daughter had some chops about stuff like this. Though she'd never say so aloud or ever (God forbid) compliment me, she did have a mighty mighty ego and always wanted to one up the Joneses, so after running it past her 'Too weird or way cool?' panel of inner judges apple green it was. Fortunately the very first guest to use our Granny Smith john was someone whose taste my mother admired (envied like hell) and Ms Trendy raved about the bathroom's color. Mommy Dearest modestly took all the credit, but I didn't mind. My choice had been vindicated.

The best way to settle my color dilemma is with swatches. Sometime this week I'll get the paint store to mix me up a pint of each of the contenders and I'll do good size test patches on the wall I look at most. See how they look as the day goes on, the light changes radically in here and what looks spiffy at 9:00am might look like barf on a plate at 2:00.

If there's anyone out there with any other suggestions do chime in. The winner of the Let's Paint LA's Office contest will get a prize!

Thanks muchly, ~LA
