Aladdin was playing as I went to sleep last night. I woke up to the news from London. I squinted at the TV and heard the familiar "bomb" "terror" "wounded" "dead" "civilians". Sighing I reached for my glasses. Ran the mental checklist of who I know might have been in harm's way. I watched for a bit. Said my prayers for the dead and the wounded. Then I came downstairs, made tea and thought about how best to spend this day. I got a bucket, went outside and picked another round of blackberries. Then I made jam. Is it frivolous to make jam on a day so filled with grief? I don't think so. That's life. Every single day has horror somewhere. Every single day. Every day babies are born too. Promises are made. Vows taken. Lessons are learned. And jam is made. I checked in, of course. Online. The TV would annoy me. Too repetitive. The ever present commercials too. "This bombing brought to you by al-Qaeda and Toyota!" Blech. Read an immediate, but thoughtful opinion piece on Bush's yatter today about 'spreading hope and peace' and how the Ann Coulter crowd would scream with derisive laughter if it had been President Kerry offering such a 'wimpy' message. Yes, partisanship in the face of global outrage. But it was true. Just like Cheney sneering at those who would 'ready indictments' after 9/11 (as though the only proper response to barbarism is bigger, uglier barbarism) if it were not the Oval Office Cowpoke mouthing the song of justice, compassion and sanity to cure the world of hatred and brutality the hawks of the right would be clamoring for 'real leadership' and decrying the 'moral weakness' of a Democratic presidency. Bush, of course, probably didn't have a clue what he was reading off the teleprompter anyhow. Hard to read for content when the prompter feed is broken into Hooked On Phonics monosyllables. But I agree with the sentiment offered by that poor unfortunate speechwriter (who is probably hanging by his 'treasonous' thumbs right now), the only way to win against the agents of Death is to live. Live and make jam. It's very good jam. In a world proved continually mad, I bid you peace, ~LA
