Social Sage

LA the Sage- Bon vivant.

It's just been a whirlwind of balls, dances, races, and afternoon teas.

Okay, I went to Wolf's spring concert on Thursday. I cried. I always do. Is there anything sappier than a bunch of little kids singing? Maybe if they were holding puppies, but other than that… Wolf had a speaking part and had a prop for one song. He's come a long way since that first concert 3 years ago when the classroom aide had to stand behind him and basically hold him in place because my twitchy son couldn't be trusted not to go a' wandering.

We also went to the circus! YAY! The circus! I love the circus. And before PETA ninjas come busting in to flog me, we went to The Cole Bros circus. No animal acts except one. Trained house cats that jumped through hoops. So back off, ninjas.

However, there were tumblers and acrobats. Jugglers and clowns. Rope dancers and contortionists. A lady shot out of a canon. A trapeze troupe. And a guy on a motorcycle on a tightrope with a chick dangling from one ankle hanging beneath. We had popcorn and cotton candy and really good seats. We ran into a bunch of people we knew and Wolf got to shake hands with Spiderman.

All sorts of end-of-school doings going on. Yesterday was Field Day. On the 21st I'm toting cupcakes to Wolf's classroom for his in-school birthday party. Pretty funny since his whole class is invited to his real birthday party which is 4 days later on the 25th. When I was at the concert a big bunch of moms RSVP-ed in person. Wolf's party is shaping up nicely. I am so relieved! Poor kid didn't even have a party last year. Time got away from me and everybody was all booked up before I could send out invites. Yes, I invited the whole class. Plus some neighbor kids and Wolf's bus friends. And the usual family friends. All told there should be about 65 people wandering around the backyard munching on BBQ. Good deal.

On Wed the 22nd is the PTA dinner. Decided to go this year. Partying down with the PTA moms. Whoo doggies.

Alex got roped into playing at Commencement. The school symphonic band is short on low brass players and Alex's former band director begged him to sit in. I laughed and laughed. When Alex was junior he swore he would never play Pomp and Circumstance again. Wrong-o! So out will come the black pants and bow tie and there Alex will be, broiling on the infield of the local harness track miserably honking his baritone alongside a bunch of fidgety high school underclassmen. He's gone to a couple of rehearsals at the school this week and says he feels as old as Methuselah.

Yesterday it was 3,000 degrees and 4.9 million % humidity, so I stayed inside and cleaned. My house is pretty much up to speed so the 'cleaning' was just some light dusting and putting stray crap away. Had plenty of time to do a pedicure. Also repotted the indoor plants. The poor things were incredibly pot-bound. Clipped a few peonies from the garden walk. Gosh they smell good!

Had a smug local moment at the garden center earlier this week. I was buying some coleus to put in under the apple tree. I was eavesdropping and heard one chick say to another one, "Gawd! What do I know from flow-uhs? We don't have flow-uhs in Brooklyn. Damn being up here in the country anyhow."

I know, I know. 3 years ago I didn't know from flowers either. And I'm from here. But still, I'm bitchy enough to cock a snook at the newbie city people.

When Mike got home yesterday we took a sauna on the front stoop. We sat there sweating and looking around at our pretty, pretty property. Mike hired a Mexican kid to put cobblestone along the edges of the driveway. Carlos has done a spectacular job. He's about half-finished and already we can see how gorgeous it is. The skinny strip of blacktop just isn't wide enough for our humongus vehicles and the sides of the driveway are chewed and rutted. Filled in with stone the mud factor is negated and we don't have to worry about the edges of the blacktop breaking off anymore. And excuse me for being biggety, but that cobblestone looks pretty darn posh.

So we looked at our spiffy driveway and the tidy but flourishing gardens and the overflowing window boxes and sighed with contentment. My flowers also made me feel happy because all this bloomy goodness is the antithesis of my mother's idea of a well landscaped property. She was strictly a boxwood and putting green lawn type and thought flowers were tacky and low-rent.

There is nothing low-rent about our gorgeous yard. ~LA
