My Unkymood Punkymood (Unkymoods)

9:27 a.m. - 2004-07-21
NIMBY

I didn’t do anything yesterday. The only time I stirred from this chair was to use the bathroom. If I’d written an entry it would have read:

‘Owwwww! Duh. Um, what? Owwwwwwwwwwwww!’

Not a good day.

Today it’s Wolf’s turn. He’s on the couch with a slight fever and a bad attitude. However, Wolf has total faith in the healing power of medicine and band-aids. (Lucky child) I gave him a Tylenol Jr to crunch up and put a band-aid on his forehead. He’s quite confident he will be better by lunchtime.

Had a nightmare last night about my garden. I dreamt I went out to water and every single plant had been gnawed to a stump. Even the geraniums. I cried and cried. Then I looked over and under the magnolia tree was the groundhog. It was the size of a Saint Bernard and it was grinning at me.

Brrrrrr.

I should really stop reading the paper first thing in the morning. I’m furious and I haven’t even taken my shower yet.

The former head of the county Conservative Party and a council member of Hometown’s Town Board since time out of mind yanked the go-ahead from an already approved project, called a re-vote while all Democratic and Independent council members were out of town, and forced the project to find a new venue. Apparently just like the US Senate procedural rules do not apply to Conservatives when they want something badly enough.

The project? A group home for 6 autistic little boys. Mr Compassionate Conservative said (and I quote), ‘Those kind of people shouldn’t live here. There’s trees and rock walls and well kept houses. You know, it’s a nice neighborhood.’

‘Those kind of people’???? ‘Nice neighborhood’????

I see. Autistic little boys do not deserve a nice home. They do not deserve a shady backyard. ‘Normal’ folk shouldn’t have to live next-door to the flawed. ‘Those kind of people’ should live in a locked institution out on an old toxic waste dump somewhere, I guess.

However word on the street has it that convicted child murderer Joel Steinberg, the fancy-pants Manhattan lawyer who tortured and beat his adopted daughter Lisa to death and so battered his wife Hedda Nussbaum that she barely looked human, is on parole and shopping for a house up here. I’m sure he will be welcomed with open arms. Because, hey, Joel Steinberg isn’t autistic.

‘Those kind of people’. Seems I’ve heard that somewhere before. Oh yeah, now I remember. It was Berlin in 1932.

I’m going to give my feverish ‘flawed’ son a kiss, then put my crippled butt in the shower and give praise to the Almighty that I wasn’t foolish enough to try and buy a house in my Hometown.

One of THOSE people, ~LA
