The Good Things for Tuesday Alex is home. Came bearing gifts and a big ‘I had fun!’ smile. For Mike: a stoneware quaffing goblet in the traditional Holy Grail shape. A nifty addition to Mike’s drinking vessel collection. For me: a walking staff, some potent incense, and cool earrings. About the size and shape of guitar picks, the earrings are carved from emu shells! Really! Emu and ostrich egg shells are layered. Between the outer camouflage dun/blue layer and the innermost layer of white is a layer of turquoise blue. The egg shells are carved and shaped to take advantage of the colors. Mine have Celtic knot design is carved on them. Lovely. I am wearing them now and really like how bold they are next to my close cropped head. I already have the hairy shins and armpits, all I need is a batik skirt and some Birkenstocks my eccentric artist look will be complete. For Wolf: a miniature version of Alex’s shinai and a shield with a dragon on it. I can’t wait to see my boys fencing. Since his sword is taller than his brother Alex has a decided advantage. However, Wolf is well used to be the little guy and will have at his big brother with gusto. The soundtrack for the summer of 2004 will now be punctuated with the clack and rap of wooden swords being struck. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Encouraging news about the Bell’s palsy. My eyelid and the corner of my mouth are twitching. Normally eyelid twitches drive me bonkers, but I take these twitches as a sign my face is coming back to life. If I concentrate hard I can make my right eye blink. It’s the only voluntary control I have, but it’s an improvement from last week when I had to close the eye with my finger. I don’t bite the inside of my cheek as often either and the swelling is going down. Hey, if this keeps up I might have a working face again by Halloween! To tell the truth though, I’m not in too big a hurry. Since it takes me 20 minutes to eat a piece of toast you can guess I haven’t been eating much. The antibiotic has rather a scouring effect too. Let’s just say I don’t anticipate any problems with colon cancer. I know it’s probably mostly water loss, but when I weighed myself this morning I was down another 4 pounds. Thus the grand total lost is 62 pounds. Go me. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It’s raining. We needed it badly. Everything was getting crispy. Probably one of the reasons that groundhog did such a number on my veggie garden. Despite it being 3 steps outside my door and that the cats like to sit in the shade of the tomato plants, the groundhog was lured by the juicy vines and overcame its fear of humans and felines to munch out on my well watered crops. I’d set the plants so late I wasn’t expecting much of a harvest anyhow. This was more of a practice run. Next year I’ll plant earlier AND put up a fence. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Unlike poor Matthew Perry, I guess I avoided addiction to vicodin. I have 2/3’s of my stash left. My joints don’t hurt so bad and I’m getting used to the headache. I can sleep without drugging myself. I’ve found a cup of Sleepy-Time and a familiar movie will put me out just as well as the vicodin did. Without the drugs my dreams are very vivid. My nighttime world isn’t a pleasant place, but sleep without dreams leaves me dull and cloudy the next day. My brain needs to run wild, I suppose. It’s the only part of me that can. That’s all the news that’s fit to print. ~LA
