I am a member of the biggest sorority in the world. It’s been my experience that this sorority has more members than the women who are lucky enough not to be part of it. What sorority am I talking about? I am one of the girls who was sexually violated before her 18th birthday. In her entry this morning Ladybug Red spoke of the double betrayal of those who were sexually abused as children. There is the act itself and there is the silence. The lack of anyone to tell. If we do tell, either we are not believed or we are run away from. Our burden of woe is too heavy for anyone else to tote. In an odd cross-connect it seems to me that the agenda of the Conservatives with their ‘traditional values’ would bring back the silence. AND the tacit permission for men to prey on little girls. I’m not saying Conservatives are pro-molestation. Even I wouldn’t go that far. But what they stump for, that mythical Norman Rockwell patriarchy where Daddy has the say and the control and women are chattel and kitchen slaves made the perfect cover for the animals. Women were blamed for ‘tempting’ men. Women were damaged goods after being raped. Women got no solace from church or government, what happened to us was our own damn fault for being female. ‘Traditional values’ meant girls and women were fondled, sodomized, raped, and we were expected to cover Daddy’s ass. To keep our silence or lose our ‘value’. We had our reputations to protect. No man would want a woman who’d already been used by another man. Even if you were only 7 years old at the time. ‘Traditional values’ decree a woman has no say over her economic freedom, civil liberties, or even say about what happens to her own body. Who owns her body? Men do. Think I’m kidding? Look around. What’s the very first thing Mr Pro-Family Bush did after taking office? He disbanded the Office for Women’s Initiatives. He re-instated the Global Gag Rule. He and his buds went after Affirmative Action, birth control, abortion, and Title 9. All the things which help enable women to control their own destinies and have the final say about what happens to their bodies. Put women at the back of the bus. Put them back in the kitchen and finally get them to shut the fuck up. Why? So Daddy, all the Daddies can do whatever they want to free from prosecution. Whatever your political stripe. Whatever your religion. Whatever your values. If you are not a member of this most horrifying of sororities I double-damn guarantee the woman next to you is. Your cousin. Your best friend. The chick at the next table. Your librarian. Your doctor. So many millions of us and the Bushmen with their disgusting traditional values still rely on our silence. I’d like to ask you all a favor. Leave a note in my comments section if you were sexually violated as a girl. You can talk about what happened to you if you want, but you don’t have to. A simple anonymous ‘me’ is fine. Speak up. Speak loud. Speak for yourself. If the Bushmen have their way this might be your last chance. You are not alone, ~LA
