My Unkymood Punkymood (Unkymoods)

10:43 p.m. - 2004-06-14
Just before bed.

Yellow snapdragons are a mood altering substance.

Spent the day with my kid. The big one. It was a nice day. We haven’t been this easy with each other since before he left home.

His driving is improving. I only braced myself once. A steep curve, merging traffic, and Alex was barreling toward it like Casey Jones. ‘Nuff said.

We went to Sam’s Club, of course. If I can call any place a hang-out it’s Sam’s Club. We needed stuff, but our trip was mostly just to go somewhere.

At Sam’s I got the aforementioned snapdragons and two pots of I-don’t-know-what-but-they’re-pretty. Big daisyish things in vibrant jewel tones. The plants have lots of long skinny leaves with sharp edges. Nifty looking. A perennial, too.

And then there were movies. I’ve made the switch to dvd. I can watch them on my computer. The completely defies the mother admonishment “Don’t sit so close!” I don’t care. Watching movies on my computer is great. I’m in my chair, THE most comfortable place in the house. I can have a smoke if I want. And with the screen so near I can see things I miss watching a TV across the room.

Today’s haul: The Return of the King to finish off the trilogy rather than any great desire to see it again. The other day I asked Wolf who Frodo was. He said, “That guy with the naked feet!”

Auntie Mame Rosalind Russell! “Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!”

The Thin Man I don’t know if it’s the script or the glam deco look or Nora Charles’ six martinis, but this movie makes me goofy with delight.

Saturday Night Fever My generation’s Breakfast Club. A rite of passage. A moment in time. John Travolta in bikini underpants. It’s all good.

Arsenic and Old Lace Capra. Ahhhh…Capra.

Trading Places “It was the Dukes! It was the Dukes!”

The Music Man What other romance has a love song with the word ‘carrion’?

The Philadelphia Story I prefer this one to Bringing Up Baby. Hepburn and Grant are dynamite together, this is just a meatier story. Plus there’s Jimmy Stewart.

His Girl Friday Rosalind Russell, again. Cary Grant, again. What can I say? They made some killer movies.

The Mirror Has Two Faces “Waiter! Would you bring us some extra dressing, please?”

And on my Top 10 List of All-time Favorites: My Man Godfrey. Yeah, William Powell again. I’m a goner for that combo of hard-bitten savvy and suave manners. James Bond pales in comparison. Carole Lombard is one of my heroes. She could play daffy and ditzy characters, but they were never truly dumb. Nor were they vapid. Like Gracie Allen, Carole Lombard always made sense. At least to herself (and to me). Her heart was always in the right place, too.

I admire women who seem to truly be themselves. Nothing apologetic about Carole Lombard’s daffiness. She is who she is. Open. Breezy. Okay with being thought odd. Heck, not even noticing other people did double-takes when she spoke. Ultimate cool in my book.

In celluloid heaven, ~LA
