My life has come full circle. Tonight Mike and I went to the show. We saw Van Helsing. Not bad. Over-long and far too many action scenes involving swinging on ropes, but an honestly meant and loving homage to Monster Movies. The dialog was snappy and there were several lines from other (non-monster) classic movies, including Casablanca. So I was happy. I amused myself through the tedious rope swinging by identifying the quotes in their proper context. The reason I said my life has come full circle is because of what I realized on our way to the theater. Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith came on. Whenever I hear that song I think of two things. Richard Linklater’s brilliant opening sequence in Dazed and Confused and 1977- the year I was 14. That’s when I saw it. The hoop snake swallowing its own tail which was my life. A 1977-to-2004 reality check. Going to the movies over in Malltown with my guy? Yup. In an extremely loud cool sports car? Yup. Wearing bell bottoms? Yup. ProKeds? Yup. Army jacket? Yup. Big silver hoop earrings? Yup. Alyssa Ashley Musk? Yup. Stoned? Yup. Am I 14 or 41? And does it matter? Nope. Hey, if ain’t broke, don’t fix it…right? Here’s something I found in my jewelry box the other day. The 1977 version of LA in the flesh. Check out that perm! I was shooting for Amy Irving and ended up looking like Lambchop.
