Let us speak of the wonderful life saving tax cut, shall we? We'll get approximately $347 from the Feds. Whoo baby! Wow! I'll go order a Ferrari right now! $347 is one sixth of one mortgage payment. $347 is 1.3 months of car insurance. $347 is 5 months of cable. Though under the new FCC rules, I expect it will be less than 3 month's of cable service real soon. Yet let us look at the REAL cost of this marvelous "tax cut". Because of the reduction is school assistance our school taxes will be going up by 12.7% rather than the projected 5.2% figured before the "tax cut". This means we'll be adding $339 to our school taxes this year. In response to cutbacks by the Feds, NY state raised its sales tax by a quarter of a percentage point. No biggie, right? A trifling extra $98. But they also completely cut the sales tax exemption of clothing costing less than $100. Since I don't buy too many mink coats, the added tax burden for our family clothing budget will be about $175 per annum. NY state also raised its income taxes to counteract cuts from the Feds and we'll be shelling out nearly $600 more next year. Minidunk was promised matching funds to complete a bridge restoration. No larkish historical restoration of a barely used bridge, this bridge connects one side of town with the other. The help from the Feds is gone now and we residents can expect a bond package and a property tax increase cum September. Projected additional cost? $198. And we can forget the new civil fire department and will continue to be serviced by the volunteer fire company 23 miles away. Minidunk's own volunteer fire company closed down last January when the roof of their 80 year old fire house collapsed under the snow and there simply hasn't been enough money to fix it. Though we've attended 4 fund raisers so far. Response time to fires in Minidunk? 30 minutes. I rest so easy knowing my house would be reduced to a smoking cellar hole before the trucks got there. So what's the "tax cut" giving us? Holy Gee! After subtracting that wonderful $347 we will be handing over $1,063 MORE this year in trickle down tax increases! Stimulate the economy? Don't make me laugh. You know, another one of Georgie's magnificent tax cuts and I'll lose my damn house. Today's Pick: "Taxman" by The Beatles
