I have been fighting for 30 years. I'm tired. The things I've been fighting for and fighting to protect are simple. Yet, at every turning I find myself fighting the same battles all over again. And again and again. Sisyphus had a better deal. Pushing a big rock up a hill for all of eternity is a cakewalk compared to getting the public and the government to believe clean water is a necessity. That bigotry and discrimination disguised as law is counter-productive to EVERYONE’S interest if we are to maintain a free society and stable government. That under-funded schools contribute to increased drug use, a higher crime rate, teen pregnancy and the formation of that dreaded scourge of the Conservatives, the Welfare Mother. That even well intentioned whacks at the First Amendment will come back and bite you in the ass. Today’s warning label is tomorrow’s government sponsored book burning. 30 years. And you know what? Nothing’s changed. Hate and ignorance and indifference win every time. More than anything it’s the indifference that’s killing me. Clean water? Who cares? I got a Britta. Equal Rights? Yeah, like I need to hear more yapping from those lezzie broads and the niggers and the spics. Bunch of Goddamn crybabies. The government is blackmailing museums by withholding funding until the museum only displays “nice” art? Yeah, whatever. Shhhh! “American Idol” is on. Who gives a shit about some paintings? Right. Who gives a shit? Nobody does. Let’s vote for the same bigoted asshole for 60 years. It’s easier than finding out who the other guy is and what he has to say. Or worse. Vote? Why? What do I care about some crummy election? Those guys are all the same anyhow. Besides, I’m too busy to vote. “Survivor 14” is on. I gotta be here to watch them eat bugs. The most basic tenets of what has made our country strong are being undermined. Our freedoms are being curtailed and nobody even thinks to question or stop it. No, because of indifference our rights are being handed over by the same people I have spent the last 30 years fighting FOR. How can I possibly continue to do battle for these do-nothings? Stoopnagels too lazy, too unwilling, too ignorant to see what’s happening or to care. Forget about broadening the umbrella of the Constitution, the great majority of Americans are too happily drugged out on Pringle’s and “The Osbourne’s” to even notice that under the Patriot Act 6 of the 10 original rights have gone missing. I am so tired. 30 years of shouting has left me speechless. My picket sign arm is numb. My heart is broken. My spirit is shriveled. 3 decades of activism and I’m burnt. I’m sick to death of all of it. I’m exhausted from standing firm for 3/4’s of my life. Make some room on the couch. I’m sitting down now. Where’s the remote and the TV Guide? I wanna know when “Real World Walla-Walla” is on. ~LA
