Please read the next line... QLGY...um...Z?

Remember when I said I was going to stop being so cheap with myself? Well there's nothing like getting a nice check from your dead grandmother to speed a girl along in that direction.

Alex and I went to the ophthalmologist this morning. His right eye had gone south and he needed new frames too, so Alex got a very spiff new pair of glasses. Did LA get a new pair of glasses? No, LA did not get A new pair of glasses, she got THREE!!

Yes, you read that correctly. Martyr Mom bought herself three pairs of glasses. Dr. Eyechart is a happy and much wealthier woman. I think the down payment on my house was a few bucks less than what I spent at the eye doc’s this morning and I DON’T CARE.

First off I broke down and got the dreaded bifocals. I HAD to. I couldn’t read any more. The line-less lenses are wickedly expensive. And two of the pairs needed the bifocal lenses. The third pair are prescription sunglasses and since I’m not a full time college student with a full time job and another part time job on top of it, I rarely need to read in the car anymore. (You can get a lot of studying done while driving. Balancing a textbook on the steering wheel takes practice though.)

Frankly I was surprised there were 3 frame styles I could wear. What’s with these teeny tiny eyeglasses? The friggin’ things look like contact lenses with frames. I have a HUGE face. A big round moon face. A balloon face. And the bitsy spectacles available nowadays are absurd parked on my big fleshy face. Completely unflattering. But thank you, Marchon. They came through. At least one frame designer realizes there are outsized people who need clear vision.

Pair #1- oval, burnished copper half-rims. Very similar to the specs I’ve worn for the past 3 years. The copper is new, the old frames are silver. Very delicate and since the frames are only around the upper half of the lenses, the glasses almost disappear. Nice, safe, classy grown-up glasses.

Pair #2- Black plastic with silver trim, sort of horn rims. These are not safe. These are glasses with Attitude. Until today I haven’t been able to find a pair of arty, funky glasses. The really hip frames are again of such tiny proportions that they looked far more pathetic nerd than coffee house on me. But these new ones WORK. A Satanic Librarian into S&M sort of dealie. I like ‘em.

Pair #3- the sunglasses. My current pair of ‘script shades are basic aviators with gunmetal frames and mirrored black lenses. A million cops can’t be wrong. But they are pretty beat up and the right lens keeps popping out, no matter how many times Mike glues it back in and adjusts the temple screw. So I saw these outrageous Elton John inspired round ones and fell in love. Huge black circles with a funny curvy nose bridge and tawny lenses. Goofy, yet styling. With sunglasses I’ve always figured it was fine to Dare To Be Stupid. When I could see okay without glasses I always had several pair of fun sunglasses and I miss them. I have taken up the mantle left behind by the Pinball Wizard (not a half boring swot ole Elton John is these days) and have my fun, fun shades.

Alas, they won’t be ready until the 21st. So I’ll be squinting and having the children hold books up across the room (even arm’s length wasn’t cutting it anymore) for another 11 days and huffing impatiently until I get my new specs.
